I. Course Number and Credit: COM 365, 3 credits
II. Course Title: Organizational Communication
III. Course Description: A study of operational concepts, skills, and values of communication and organizational behavior.
IV, Prerequisites: Six hours of communication courses including Com. 212 or Com 240 and junior or senior status.
V, Course Justification: Communication is a primary component in the development and stabilization of any organization. During the past fifteen years schaolars in management studies as well as communication studies have combined to develop a significant body of literature dealing with organizational communication. This course offers students an applicaitn of communication theory to a variety of business contexts.
VI. Course Objectives:

The student will be able:

  1. to explain the communication processes with an organizational context.
  2. to analyze human behavior in organization.
  3. to explain resource development, motivation, and communication within an organization.
  4. to describe the nature of interpersonal communication within an organization.
  5. to distinguish various management communication styles.
  6. to assess communication patterns and evaluate their effectiveness.
  7. to conduct a communication training program appropriate to an organization.
VII. Course Outline:
  1. The bases of communication in organization.
  2. Understanding human behavior in organizatioins
  3. Resource Development and motivation in its communication components.
  4. Interpersonal communication as found in the organization.
  5. Management styles and the communication process.
  6. Assessment of organizational communication and the advocacy of change
  7. Designing successful communication training programs.
VIII. Methods of Instruction:

Lectures, assigned readings, group discussions, and group training sessions.

IX. Course Requirements:

Readings, research paper, group training simulation, and oral reports.

X. Means of Evaluation:

Examinations, term paper, and group training simulation.

XI. Resources: No additional resources will be needed to offer this course
beyond keeping current with library acquisitions.
